🇿🇦 Are SA’s political holidays still relevant in our changing society?

@StephenGrootes has suggested a national dialogue to re-evaluate the importance of political holidays. If you could propose a change to one of South Africa’s political holidays, which one would it be and why?

Do you believe South Africa’s political holidays are still as relevant today as they were when they were first established?

  • :+1: Yes, absolutely
  • :pinching_hand: Mostly, but some less so
  • :-1: No, their relevance has significantly decreased
  • :person_shrugging: Unsure

More relevant than ever, actually. We need to tell the folklore of our nation’s birth and what we have overcome to contextualise how much progress has happened over the last three decades. Take 16 June 1976 as an example: it was another 18 years before the country tasted freedom. Hector Pieterson would only have been a 30yo man in that queue to participate in the democracy. He should be retelling stories from his youth to his grandchildren today, but that opportunity was robbed - that is what we are commemorating. Every public holiday has stories like that attached to it.
