SARS has an antagonistic, adversarial stance to compliant taxpayers while many dodge tax completely

Edward Kieswieter sat on the stage at The Gathering and admitted that there are in the order of 200 000 individuals that either aren’t registered to pay tax that ought to be or who are non-compliant, he also claimed that they play nice with compliant taxpayers.

I am impressed with what SARS has done to clean up and I believe in paying tax and have been compliant and co-operative since I first started paying tax, probably about 35 years ago. I pay personal tax, business tax and VAT in both businesses.

In my most recent personal tax assessment, SARS disallowed my claims on an Airbnb property and office costs and told me I needed to provide a lot of documentation or pay 90k odd. This notification came as my mum was dying and I was distracted and I missed the deadline to get everything through.

Once she died, I re-engaged, disputed the assessment and was working with them to provide the documents when they reached into my bank account and took 50k without notifying me. Is this playing fair? I don’t think so, I think it is bullying and vile. They use all their might against the average small business and person whilst letting the whales off Scott-free. Sies

Hi there, I am sorry for your loss and to hear of your experience. I had a similar experience some years ago and complained to the Tax Ombud. It took a long time but I was successful. The office details should be available by a search.
