Suspended IDT CEO, spokesperson offer DM journalist R60K in cash to quash investigation

Absolutely world-class work - thorough to the nth degree. Thank you for doing what you do, PLM and DM. I often wonder where we would be in South Africa without our brilliant media (and I refer to the media that is brilliant, which is sadly far from all of it).

Congratulations, PLM! You make me proud to share the Myburgh name.

It is astounding to realise how corruption has become entrenched in our society - in the face of a free press and courageous journalists such as PLM and others at Daily Maverick. But it saddens me to think that the influence of our free press will never be enough to stop the corruption. If people like those in this revelation are brazen enough to do what they (allegedly) did, what will ever stop them? Clearly, a government involving the ANC will not! I pray that the majority of voters in our country will demonstrate that they do have a conscience and also the guts to finally remove the ANC from positions of power.

How sad that the freedom fighters who once held the moral high ground have descended into the pits of shame!

Only R60k? The contract was worth over R800million. They got caught out being cheap.

Mienke! We also wondered if they’ve gotten away with something like this before. But even then, it must be desperation station over there to try it with PLM. The full investigation will probably reveal why.

Mind boggling. Lets hope that finally the two involved get their just desserts!!

I was lucky to see up close how Pieter-Louis went about getting the story to this point. He operates with true professionalism and his north star is to ensure that our journalism leads to accountability. His journalism has saved this country Billions and there is more to come….more excellent reporting linked to today’s story loading for next week. I agree, they seemed really quite chilled about doing it….

it was just a little starter..there was access to tenders in the mix

Brilliant well executed. Now comes the hard part getting them into jail

This is huge! I wonder if the ANC will also protect them and nothing will come of it?

Great work and courage to take the high road… allegedly :upside_down_face:

Now that we’ve all had a moment to pick our jaws up off the floor,@StephenGrootes reflects on the political underworld here.

A lot of us are wondering what comes next in this saga. First up, Minister of Public Works Dean Macpherson is expected to address the media, and what he has to say will likely set the tone for the government’s broader response. @Kara explains here.

Am looking forward to see how this little house of cards comes crashing down. There must be a decent list of people implicit in this. Can only imagine the scrambling that’s happening in the background to create some cover!

Looks like they mistook an investigative journalist of Myburgh’s calibre for a corruptible sophist :coin: offering him cash as if integrity were for hire. Naive? Or, as @StephenGrootes wrote, just brazenly accustomed to a system where truth has a price? Or both?! :grimacing:

What gets me is the casual nature of the conversation, like its done everyday in the normal course of business… Bloody hell!

The IDT is only the tip of the iceberg what about all the other state owned “implementing agents” who have been fleecing national and provincial departments? Will they also be looked at?
