When Daily Maverick investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh was approached by IDT spokesperson, Phasha Makgolane, to discuss a “very sensitive matter” it was evident that he wished to pay him off to bury an ongoing investigation into IDT CEO Tebogo Malaka’s property dealings.
Instead of rebuffing Makgolane’s advances, Daily Maverick saw it as a unique opportunity to possibly document high-level skullduggery involving a key state-owned entity’s CEO.
After weeks of preparation, Myburgh met with the duo while a security and forensics firm secretly recorded the encounter.
Sure enough, not long into the meeting Makgolane produced a white Dior shopping bag stuffed with a sizeable stack of R200 notes. Read the full story below.

Could it be that bribery is so normal in their world, and happens so easily and often, that they just didn’t consider that PLM couldn’t be bribed? And that they had possibly done this before and with success? Another indicator of the widespread nature of corruption.
