Suspended IDT CEO, spokesperson offer DM journalist R60K in cash to quash investigation

When Daily Maverick investigative journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh was approached by IDT spokesperson, Phasha Makgolane, to discuss a “very sensitive matter” it was evident that he wished to pay him off to bury an ongoing investigation into IDT CEO Tebogo Malaka’s property dealings.

Instead of rebuffing Makgolane’s advances, Daily Maverick saw it as a unique opportunity to possibly document high-level skullduggery involving a key state-owned entity’s CEO.

After weeks of preparation, Myburgh met with the duo while a security and forensics firm secretly recorded the encounter.

Sure enough, not long into the meeting Makgolane produced a white Dior shopping bag stuffed with a sizeable stack of R200 notes. Read the full story below.

This is why I support the DM. Brave, forensic, law-informed, investigative journalism of the highest standard. It seems that naming and shaming with facts is the only way to challenge what has become the norm. Let’s hope it has some effect.

What an insult! They steal millions and want to buy you off with a measly R60k. Well done PLM, hats off to you.
I’m sure Cyril the Jellyfish is shocked (again).

I also can’t get my head around this. Did they not do any homework on him?

Could it be that bribery is so normal in their world, and happens so easily and often, that they just didn’t consider that PLM couldn’t be bribed? And that they had possibly done this before and with success? Another indicator of the widespread nature of corruption.

Mindboggling amateurish. Hope we don’t have to wait long for arrests here.

MEGA STORY. also firmly putting the bribery bar above R100k  the next bribe is gonna seriously test resolve and commitment to defending the truth.

Well done DM and PLM. As offensive as is this blatant example of criminality, there is an element of pathos in the sheer stupidity displayed.
