Table Mountain experiences

Hikers, walkers, riders, rock rabbits, I’m working on a series called The Storied Mountain and would love to hear your favourite places, trees, caves, streams on the Peninsula’s bergs. It would find it’s way into the article so say if it’s okay to use your name. Just a few sentences, no essays please because they won’t fit. Don Pinnock

This Table Mountain experience is from several years ago. It was the end of a long (three-month) trip which included a stay at our favorite farm in the whole world, in The Crags, a side trip to Malawi, and some exploration along the Garden Route between Cape Town and Storms River mouth. The last day before going to the airport to return to Germany, we had a day to explore Table Mountain. This clutch of chicks seemed to be our farewell committee, urging us to come back soon. And we did, and have been returning to South Africa ever since as often as we can.

Michael Simpson (it’s OK to use my name if you use this note and/or photo. I can also share more photos of that day if you wish.)

Hi Don, I know you asked for a sentence or two but if you have time see if anything here can be used and I can summarise. Not sure if the Blockhouse qualifies for Table Mountain! Rosalie Blocktober — walking the talk on Devil’s Peak

Hi Don, I lead quite a few hikes on the mountain as I am a Ramblers leader. Unpaid of course, but just for the fun of it.

One of my favourites is the one I call, Agatha’s Gulley, Camel rock and the secret underground enchanted forest. However, if I were to describe it, it would no longer have a secret enchanted underground forest. But the main route is up the first set of “stairs” from Constantia neck parking, then a left and up past Eagles Nest, to a gap and down and around up Agatha’s Gulley, under a cave overhang, then past the rock toilet and up, up, up to the top and thru to the Crenellations for a tea stop. Then on and past the Camel rock and down to Villiers dam. Skirt that and find the path to the secret underground enchanted forest. The forest is in between two sets of crags and the trees are underground between mammoth “worm holes” in rocks, gently on thru, carefully over moss and lichens, missing the hanging Spanish moss. Stop for lunch and then back to the jeep track and back to Constantia neck parking. I trust that this is easy, else join a Rambler’s hike. Chris Taylor

Hi Don, I try to get up on the Mountain as often as I can! Some of my favourite experiences are finding the Tahrs on quiet mornings on the slopes of India Venster. Always magical.

I love the mountain for it accessibility inclusivity. In May every year MS (multiple sclerosis) day is celebrated worldwide. In 2024 the Multiple Sclerosis Society of South Africa took more than 50 people, many in wheelchairs and most with mobility issues, for lunch on iconic Table Mountain. From parking, the cable car ride to lunch in the restaurant, was superbly arranged. A magnificent experience!
