With the price of fuel rising, I am giving my petrol-run car a bit of a side eye. But hybrid and electric vehicle prices are still so premium.
Is it time to trade in the old internal combustion engine (ICE) for something more modern, or are you staying put? What is the best option right now? If you’ve done the maths, or have some insight, I’d love to hear it.
If you had to choose a fuel for efficiency and cost, what do you see as the best option?
Petrol
Diesel
Hybrid
Electric
There shoulda been an ‘Other’ option. I’m feeling rather smug on my 125cc orange monster scooter. And yes, money was the constraining factor. In an ideal world, I would have signed up one of the new Chinese electrics.
I had an electric scooter in Jozi for a while. 60kph top speed is fine in theory…. My 250cc upgrade cut my commuting time in half and gave me 2 amazing long trips. I covet the electric bikes they’re making in Kenya. 27k, last time I checked, and suitable for EC, where I live now.
Looks like you presume that all your readers drive. I loved passing cars in rush hour in CT, on my bicycle.
There’s a lot to be said for human-powered vehicles (like bicycles), especially for short trips to the shops and back. And longer trips just because it’s fun! Not to forget the health benefits.
I am specifically looking for a new vehicle, so I am keen to hear what fuel option readers would advise ![]()
If an electric car was in my budget, I would be looking in that direction too. Unfortunately, I think there are still a few years ahead before electric cars become more prevalent here and the prices come down.
