That’s a good question and one worth asking of the NPA @Greg

One school of thought that has been put forward is that if the corruption was exposed through journalistic endeavour, a percentage of recovered funds should go towards a media sustainability fund.

The Zondo Commission cost a lot, but one could argue that it made a net profit due to the recovered funds.

As far as I remember, the money, such as the R1.1bn from McKinsey, went to the Criminal Asset Recovery Account. Then it was channelled into the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining. I wonder what our readers think of that (don’t forget Stilfontein).

So, a member of our community asked what happens to the billions of Rands recovered by the NPA’s Asset Forfeiture Unit.

It goes into the Criminal Assets Recovery Account for disbursement to crime-fighting. The Unit has either recovered or frozen R15-bn in state capture loot. Some of it has been returned to Eskom or been assigned to crime fighting. I’ll get some charts made to make it easier for you to see.
