The R145bn Transnet back brace to fix the spine of the South African economy

Nobody asked for a history lesson on the origins of Transnet, but it’s vital to understand where the state logistics group is right now.

Many years ago it was suggested that rather than pursuing the narrow gauge option Transnet should start planning for a change over to a standard gauge system which would allow more than doubling the rail volumes. The suggestion from the then DG of transport - railways - was at the time rejected by amongst others Mr S Gama, the reasons are now becoming obvious. So whilst the rest of Africa is changing to standard gauge with EU grants and very favourable low interest bearing long term loans SA is being left behind because we have no plans on how to harmonise our rail network with those of the rest of Africa.

Indeed, I took a lot of flak from Transnet engineers when I suggested that the old administration left us in a terrible situation in the pages of Popular Mechanics magazine. Maybe they’ll see things differently now?
