Why do you work in the career you have? And do you have any advice for others looking for roles in a similar field?

I have children in school, and a beautiful wife… working is a necessity. I have no other skills that people will pay me for outside of my ability to turn a phrase and pursue a niche interest to its logical conclusion.
My advice to anyone starting out their career is to be nerdy and “it’s okay to be excited about your job” don’t fall for the cynical trap of hating your job.
I think a little insanity and naiveté is needed to actively want to work in revenue for journalism! Honestly you can’t sustain in this environment unless your propelled by a love for people and the country. Sounds corny but in the really rough times, you have to ask yourself “if not us, then who?” I also believe that every problem has a solution (even a problem as big as funding journalism) so I’m always looking for entrepreneurial ideas. In terms of satisfaction, I get that from seeing the impact of our journalism - macro and micro. Most of all, when we get to hire a new journalist because I’ve had the privilege of seeing that more journalists means more impact for South Africa. In terms of advice for anyone wanting to enter this field, if you’re serious that you want to work in the business side of journalism, send me your CV!
