Introduce Yourself

Hi everyone, I’ll start. My name is Alet Law. I am the head of audience development at Daily Maverick. I’m addicted to the news and world affairs which comes in handy in the work that I do. I love to read fiction in my free time, but being a mom to a one-year-old, there is little time for that these days. Excited to be here!

Hi Mattia! Welcome to the community!

I am Estelle, a senior journalist reporting from the Eastern Cape for Daily Maverick. News addict, likes cooking, have one big, demanding ginger cat, big nerd, love reading., love my job. Frequently cause trouble where there are injustices being committed. I speak truth to power. Have been stuck in a lift with a dead man once. Been banned from several public hospitals and at least one municipa buiding for being too nosy (more than once). Ignorning bans with impunity. If you have an EC story I am all ears - also if you want to see pictures of my cat.

Welcome Estelle, its great to have you! Can’t wait to hear more of your fascinating stories, I have so many questions about your lift experience :open_mouth: Keep being too nosy, your work is so important.

oh boy. you all should NOT have let me loose on here. but that’s YOUR problem, not mine.

My name is my username, I am a graphic designer for Daily Maverick Growth Dept and my favourite movie line ever is also my life philosopy: “Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not some farcical aquatic ceremony!”

Hello. Anso here. A journalist, activist, mother, grandmother, cat lover, dog lover, baboon lover (no, they are not my pets, I don’t cuddle them, feed them, play with them, I like them in the wild behind my house far up the mountain)…I live in Cape Town and wish I had more time to read, walk, swim and be silly. When I remember, I am the deputy to the Editor-in-Chief at Daily Maverick.

Howzit peeps. I’m Heather Robertson, one of the resident pot-handlers at Daily Maverick. I check that the DM journalism food-for-thought-and-action is well seasoned, and cooked. I also try and make sure that too many cooks don’t spoil the bredie and that our story menu during the day and in the weekly newspaper satiates our readers’ needs. In other words I am the DM168 newspaper editor and the DM online day editor. I occasionally regret that my pot-checking day and night mission has robbed me of the time to write, which is the reason I became a journalist, but I love this job that is always a surprise and a challenge and I feed off the amazing energy and enthusiasm for seeking the truth and exposing the lie that is at the heart of Team Daily Maverick.

Hi Everyone on Daily Maverick Connect, I’m Saskia and a member of the team at Daily Maverick - I’m also a passionate South African and a lover of beautiful things (like for example kindness, art, music and people). My home has teens and a schnauzer and most of my time is spent in their service  I call Cape Town home and on Sundays you’ll find me in a radio studio playing music on one of Cape Towns most loved radio stations. Looking forward to building this community with you.

Hi everyone! I’m Sarah Hoek, and from 9-5, I am DMC’s Community Manager. I previously worked over with the newsletters team, but DMC was too exciting to miss, and I can’t wait to see this space grow and thrive. From 5-9, I am a passionate Formula 1 fan, a proud dog mom to an elderly sausage dog named Nutmeg and a book nerd who helps run a bookclub in Cape Town.

Hello DMC Community, and thank you Maverick staff for creating this group. My name is Michael. I am an American citizen living in Germany who travels regularly to South Africa. I care deeply about what is happening in all three countries, so I follow political news and opinion from many sources about each one of my “home” countries. The DM is by far my favorite source of news, international as well as South African. In addition to being a politics and foreign affairs junkie, my interests include reading, photography, travel, and pet-sitting. I look forward to “meeting” others in this community.

Hullo - I’m David. I lay claim to being the first ever insider, but not with my current email address, as there were glitches with my subscription at some point and I had to re-sub with this email address to sort out the issues.

I cannot start my day without news - the DM is first on my reading list.

I love cooking with wood fire as the source of heat, my favourite being my Tandoor oven - my profile pic.

I’m looking forward to seeing what transpires here …

Hi all, I’m a researcher at UCT completing my masters in economics under Prof Beatrice Conradie. I’m interested in agriculture, food systems, and the causes of hunger and malnutrition. Right now I’m working with commercial farms to understand what they’re doing to build soil fertility and enable sustainable production. Long term I’d love to understand the nature of our food systems in South Africa, to really figure out how to ensure every citizen is able to get secure access to nutritious food, and that food is produced in a just and sustainable manner. I’m also on the lookout to connect with citizens initiatives to improve society in general! Please reach out to chat if you’re in food/hunger/agriculture and are keen to collaborate.

Hi I am Michael Rivarola a semiretired consulting engineer and ADR practitioner in the built environment and construction industry; I lecture part time. I detest dishonesty and the exploitation of the environment and its resources at the expense of communities and our legacy. I am an avid and vociferous opponent of the development of fossil fuels and destruction of our marine resources and pristine endowments to enrich the usual connected few.

I’m also very curious to see how things go in this community as I’ve become extremely interested in the community comms space especially as an alternative to (doom) scrolling!
