Hi there. I’m Rich. I was formerly the head of Marketing for MTN and then Virgin Mobile Australia. I was also a founder of a number of startups in the mobile media and advertising space. But now I run a high end tour company, focussed on bring Americans to Southern Africa.

I am just starting to explore this pace, but am excited about what it can offer.

My name is Fred Pheiffer. I am a lexicographer working from home for the Bureau of the Woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal in Stellenbosch. Home is Suurbraak, a hamlet outside Swellendam. I enjoy cooking, gardening, walking with our dogs in the mountain, parkrunning, Pilates and collecting fine wines and comics. Regular reader of The Guardian, The New Yorker and the Nieuwe Rotterdamse Courant (NRC), and die-hard M&G supporter. I continue to be amazed by what the DM has achieved in such a relatively short time! I write a monthly column for Netwerk24 on language matters.

Hi - my name is Margie Worthington-Smith and I regard DM as one of only a handful of news and opinion platforms that I trust and whose quality of journalism and writing is worth considering. I have spent my life (over 6 decades) working in SA in the civil society sector and am passionate about the SA “project” and how it can (and is?) transforming to become genuinely African-centric by creating genetic spaces for real debate and conversations.

hey stranger!

Hey,

I am Sarah Rice. I am currently doing work in the PeopleOps consulting (new school HR) and strategy coaching space. My core skill is supporting people to work through difficult conversations without losing their minds or integrity. In other news, I like long walks on the beach, Sunday afternoons on the couch and dancing in the rain. I am very interested to see what this community turns into

Hi, I am Janice, “retired” and living in Kidds Beach, Eastern Cape. I spend a lot of my day on community work in Kidds Beach, as part of the Ratepayers and Residents Association. We spend a lot of our time and effort fixing up where the municipality doesn’t seem to have any enthusiasm to do their job. I enjoy the outdoors, gardening and project managing.

My name is Toni, I’m an 81 yearold workaholic trying to make the world a better place, not for youth or women but families of every kind, human, animal and plant. I’m addicted to the idea that it starts with healthy families and relationships that are at the heart of what is needed to fix so much of what needs fixing. If we can learn to dialogue, speak openly and listen lovingly what more do we want.

Hello Mavericks,

I’m Phara Kokozela, and I’m glad to be here in the midst of thinkers and solution providers.

In 2019, I enrolled for a debt counselling course and became certified — not to practice, but to research this volatile industry.

Over the past 6 years, I’ve seen how fraud, abuse, and systemic failures leave thousands of South Africans unprotected and denied justice. The problem isn’t the debt review program or its counsellors, but a failing regulator that gives the whole industry a bad name.

I’m here because I believe reform is overdue, and I’m committed to helping restore dignity, rights, and accountability to consumers. I’ll be happy to connect with those who know how it feels to be denied justice and believe in system reform to make our country safe, fair, and accountable for all.

I am a closet inventor, my hobby is machining and tinkering with anything from novel design for the next patent or getting the old Yamaha to start.

Hi Daily Maverick community — I’m Kenny Meiring, your Financial Wellness Coach

I help South Africans make calm, confident money decisions.

I’m a Certified Financial Planner and write the weekly Financial Wellness Coach Q&A in Daily Maverick 168. My happy place is turning complicated financial jargon into simple steps you can actually use.

What’s one money question you’ve been meaning to ask for ages? Drop it below, or tell me what topic you’d like me to unpack next.

P.S. This space is for education and general guidance; not personalised advice. If you need one-on-one help, I’m happy to chat offline.

Hi there! I am thrilled to be a part of this community knowing that we all support DM’s work in some shape or form.

My passion for empowering people has led me to co-found a movement that aims to provide the average South African with proven frameworks and tools to enable them to live a life on their own terms. >> www.learningtolive.africa

Origin story
I was born and raised in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town. I completed an undergrad in Conservation Biology at UWC, and only worked in the field for 3 years before I was drawn into the world of learning design, website design and all other things online.

Where I find myself now
After working for “the man” for 16 years, I finally reached for the courage within to leave a very hypocritical and toxic corporate environment to forge my own path.

What’s next
As a Social Media Content Strategist, I help people make sense of social media, turning chaos into business results.

Pet project
Neuroplasticity, manifestation and intentional goal-setting is great, but (IMHO) falls short when there is a lack of community and accountability. I’ve created a Discord group called The Purpose Collective where like-minded people can get together to chat about the above.

Please reach out if anything I’ve said resonates within!

Hi Andy. Long time…

I’m Frank Einhorn. Retired but with lots of skills that are still useful. My book on business project management is published in USA (have practiced for 40 years and taught for 15). My book on ‘live with less financial stress’ will never be published but has been well received by those to whom I gave a softcopy. Otherwise, we keep in touch with our three grown up children - Joburg, Geneva, Melbourne. Many hobbies including singing with my guitar (rock and folk).

Welcome Edward, great to have you.

@Estelle this mission seems right up your alley.

Hi. I am Betsie Louw, retired dentist. I cannot cope with the corruption in SA. Corruption should be tackled from the foundation to the roof. I encountered corruption and bullying in my workplace for several years until I decided to take early retirement. Some people think they are untouchable, and this has to end. Even if one’s story is like a drop in the bucket, it should be told. Every little drop counts to fill up the bucket. I am writing a book about my life. The good the bad and the ugly, and happy endings. I love to read, crochet, knit and train. I subscribed to DM as I want to keep in touch with reality, know what is going on in the country as well as in the world. I love my country and will never leave as I believe there will be a better future for all of us.
