Use this space to report municipal issues in your area. (eThekwini Municipality)
Our Constitution requires our elected officials to consult with us on our wants and needs, and then make provision in the Budget and Integrated Development Plan.
For instance, provision is supposed to be made for playgrounds for children of different age groups. Instead, they provide a standard swing, jungle gym, and slide regardless of the children’s ages in the area. Showing that no consultation has taken place. Then, in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, regular checks must be made to ensure that these items are safe for use. This is not happening even though they have been told that these items are faulty, such as a rusted swing leg.
When I did two in-depth research surveys in which I interviewed both the children and their parents, I discovered that what was being provided was not what they wanted, nor had they been consulted, as is required. I even went and provided them with the results. Nothing was done, and the situation remains unchanged.
I have a grandson who needs to go out and play, but it is unsafe. Therefore, the only place to take him is to a fast-food restaurant to use their playground.
Now they have installed several items of exercise equipment in several parks without providing guidance or encouragement for their use.
