Robberies during Uber rides

I have been hearing too many stories of passengers in Uber rides (especially women) being subject to being robbed at red lights (especially around the Castle area at night) in a way that SEEMS as if the driver might be in on it in a way that gives enough plausible deniability: ( eg. waiting for red lights, opening windows in vulnerable spots).

How common is this in your experience and how should UBER be held to account for incidents like this?

This again is a situation where criminals are utilising the gig economy to facilitate opportunities and i find it very disturbing, not least for the trauma it inflicts (i’m not even going to mention the horrible story that DID gain national attention).

This petrifies me, I have JUST started allowing my 19 year old to Uber during the day

The impression i get is that these incidents happen mostly at night time but i have nothing real to base this on.
I do generally recommend sharing your ride progress with a trusted friend by default already although this doesnt do much in THIS particular instance.

A woman shared her story about this on John Maytham’s show a few weeks ago. Absolutely terrifying. It did highlight to me though how important it is to have a plan in case of things going wrong. Recounting a terrible Uber experience - Afternoon Drive with John Maytham - Omny.fm
