South Africa's best small towns

Hi all!

@SarahHoek are we hanging out at the right small town talking spot?

Haha who knows he may have shares in one of the establishments

I’d like to know from the writers, if they had to live in any small town in the country, where it would be and why.

Hello Bienne-so you are the one who made Barrydale the Maverick small town of the year. What was it about Barrydale that blew you away?

I would choose J-Bay. Still in the Eastern Cape which I love. Small enough to be really easy to live in but big enough to have lots of shops, restaurants and things to do. Also the beaches are FANTASTIC! And friendly people but that is definitely an Eastern Cape thing in most places.

Definitely Richmond. I am genuinely considering retiring there. The people are so friendly and the pace is so slow it makes you feel human again

What’s your best province @Alet?

Jeffreys Bay for the win- the surfer chill vibe by the beach is all of the things!! Also something about living by the sea that seems more qualitative

@AngelaDaniels did you get a chance to surf while in JBay?

@Reid you have just graduated from university and now you thinking about retiring in Richmond?

Errr, that’d be a no. Tried once a long time ago and the thought of sharks is just too much for me. I could not relax!

You have to have goals Heather! I think Reid is on to something, early retirement for the win.

I loved how below the sleepy Karoo facade so much is happening - the stories, characters, gossip. The hotel with its slightly checkered past. Also, clean public toilets. The only litter I saw in the main road was one cigarette butt. The local SAPS cop / martial arts fighter who started Barrydale Fight Club stole my heart

How many people live in Richmond more or less?

I like to plan my life 50 years in advance :joy:

Don’t know whether to put the heart or the laugh emoji.

Oh that’s super valid. I would also be terrified of the sharks. And I wouldn’t be able to keep my balance

I love J-Bay but wary of the Patensie potato farmers at the pubs…..
