I shop at these two stores mainly for fresh goods and their delis. Meat I get at a butcher, because they know what I want, and deliver. All other items I get from the friendly Bangladeshi store down the road. And price is the primary reason. Consistently cheaper than the stores listed.
Hey, we need to hack our shopping these days. This is my hack.

Most of my shopping is done at SPAR, but Checkers and PnP are alternatives on occasion, since I need to drive to our neighbouring town to reach them.

When we moved to the Swellendam area three years ago, there were only a Checkers and a Spar in town. The Checkers is an excellent store – neat and clean, with a wide range of goods and very friendly and helpful staff. About a year ago, PnP also opened a store. Initially, they weren’t a patch on Checkers, but they’ve gradually improved the goods on offer and their service. I now do about half my shopping at PnP, half at Checkers.
I have unshakeable brand loyalty to PnP, since I watched the Garden Centre going up in Cape Town as a kid, and the PnP there was, still is, the anchor store. A long association, therefore.
And get this: Checkers employs immigrants on motorbikes for their Sixty60 deliveries in Swellendam, whereas PnP has just recently introduced their ASAP! delivery service, with battery-assisted bicycles ridden by locals from Railton. Significant?
Recently, we started buying our fresh produce in Suurbraak, where we live. The Pakistani general dealer has lovely fresh fruit and veg at genuinely cheap prices. There is also a new bakery in our village with an organic store that sources fresh produce from the surrounding farms. We’ve become locavores.
The meat we eat, I order monthly from Karoo Ostrich in Oudtshoorn. Excellent products and delivery within days. We’ve stopped eating other mammals, having to witness truckloads of sheep and pigs along the N2 being taken to the abattoir in Swellendam.

Convenience, Checkers is across the road from me. I save petrol by walking.

It’s Shoprite by the way, not Shopright.

Checkers has a more welcoming vibe, and their meat products are great. It also seems like they go to better lengths to keep you interested as a customer. I got to Woolies for my vegetables and for the bougie things not found anywhere else (LOL).

I shop where the price of parking is most lenient in price and favourable in position.
