This article Targeted hits surge, masterminds act with impunity was a reminder of the global assault on truth. The reference to “daily hits” to remove any impediment to profit, position, power, or influence, is frightening.
A quick web search will illustrate the extent of hostility towards truth, and paint a picture of growing impunity of those who gain from remaining unaccountable. To be clear, those who’d rather nobody knew of certain matters have always been around, and knowing more than you were supposed to has always been dangerous.
And yet, call me naive if you must, but I recall a time when exposure of murky dealings had consequences; a time when letting morals guide you was OK. Journalists once commanded respect. Today, being a good journalist means having a target on your back. In some parts of the world, those targets are deliberately shot at. Or bombed.
Journalism is fast becoming a high-risk profession. The hostility towards those exposing truth is rising.
This article is a focus on professionals being assassinated when exposing illicit money-flows. They cannot count on safety from either the police or the judiciary, and their bravery would be pointless, were it not for journalists to connect the dots and let the light of their integrity keep shining. As such, it does not merely document events that affect our small part of the world, but reminds us of the value of good journalists. Without these journalists, our world would become ever darker.
To all such journalists - thank you.
