Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape might get a new name - a proposal that has been met with mixed responses. If the plan goes ahead, Port Alfred’s name would become iCawa or iCoyi, reestablishing a historical and cultural isiXhosa connection.
The Eastern Cape Geographical Names Council says that the proposals to change the colonial name complies with international guidelines, but opposers are concerned that changes would have negative impacts on the tourism industry.
