Drinking water quality in South Africa

I came across this article quoting the US CDC which lists South Africa as one of the countries where one should not drink the tap water. This is a pretty broad generalisation! I tried to find whether their are specific areas of the country where buying bottled water might give a clue as to where people still freely drink the tap water (or not  ) but could not find any breakdown by province. Is there any hope that we will be able ot move to the list of water-safe countries as tourism is a such a major economic boost in many areas Countries Where You Can Drink Tap Water When You Travel

Hi Stef. As you say, the US CDC suggestion that ALL tap water in SA is unsafe is a broad generalization - as water in most of our big cities is still safe to drink, albeit of declining quality according to the latest Blue Drop reports. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about water quality in many smaller municipalities as it was not microbiologically safe to drink the water in almost half (46%) of smaller municipalities during the last Blue Drop assessment in 2022. More comprehensive information on a provincial level can be seen here.
