Estelle Ellis, the Eastern Cape’s fiercest voice for the voiceless

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our colleague and veteran journalist, Estelle Ellis.

For years, Estelle served as a relentless, compassionate advocate for communities across Nelson Mandela Bay, and the broader Eastern Cape. Whether uncovering systemic failures, reporting on critical water crises, or sharing stories of local resilience with her trademark wit and empathy, she never hesitated to shine a light into the darkest corners.

Estelle’s dedication embodied the very best of independent journalism: putting people first and holding power accountable with unwavering integrity.

Estelle made a lasting impact on Daily Maverick and on many people who had the privilege of knowing and working with her. If you would like to share a memory, reflection or message of condolence, please do so below.

I didn’t know Estelle personally, but I felt her passion and commitment to revealing the lives of struggling people, her caring and her deep humanism that shone through all her stories in DM. It’s so sad she’s been taken from us  :sad_but_relieved_face:
