Minister's 22-year-old chief of staff quietly removed from her role

This week the biggest read on Daily Maverick was a story about the Minister of Social Development’s chief of staff. A 22-year-old with a relative close to the minister was appointed in the position without any relevant experience or qualifications. She was quietly moved out of the role this week after the story appeared in Daily Maverick. Did you catch the story? What was your thoughts?

Fabulous way to keep the mind active Rae!

@Aletlaw This does not come as a surprise to me that people are hired without qualifications. It’s happening all over state institutions—not only with high positions or through nepotism, but also by tasking unqualified personnel to handle law-based matters. A hypothetical example would be tasking court clerks to sit on the magistrate’s bench and pass judgments or hospital admissions clerks to perform surgery. Such unqualified appointments are standard in one of the most crucial institutions and have persisted for 17 years, impacting thousands of citizens financially and in matters of justice. I submitted a tip-off regarding this institution about a week ago—you might want to look into it.

Surprised, yet also not. “Evil thrives when good men do nothing” comes to mind. If the energy given toward cadre deployment could be shifted, SASSA queues could be diminished with the correct technology, strategy and implementation.
