This year, one of my priorities is building a better understanding of my finances, savings and budgets. Kenny Meiring has some advice on how to be in better financial standing come the end of 2026 here, but what tips can you share with the community on how to manage money better?
I quite like reading financial books for advice, like The Psychology of Money. This year I’d like to read The Simple Path to Wealth by JL Collins.
My short-term goal is to replenish our emergency fund after some unexpected emergencies.
I subscribe to the FIRE movement and get inspiration from the Mr Money Mustache blog. The Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) movement - Wikipedia
Thank you for sharing. I am adding both of those to my to-read list!
Awesome, thank you for the recommendation!
One of the big lessons I’ve learnt, which ties closely to many of the principles of the FIRE movement, is that over your lifetime you will earn a finite amount of money. What you spend that money on is the result of the choices you make.
If you chase immediate gratification and get yourself into debt to own things, you will end up spending a large portion of the money you earn in your lifetime on repaying that debt.
On the other hand, if you are able to delay gratification and save up for the things you want, you will spend less money on debt repayment and more on having wonderful experiences.
