If an 11 storey Public Administration building burnt to the ground anywhere but the former homelands of South Africa it would be huge news on most mainstream textual news platforms, but so far just dramatic videos on YouTube or TV platforms. There is much to analyse here!
Hi Rosie,
We have someone looking into this. We’re trying to determine what documents, files or system were damaged, if there there electronic back ups and how this might affect service delivery (among other things). It might take us a little longer than it take to get those dramatic videos up but we’re taking a look. Anything in particular you’re keen to know about?
Grear, thanks! I was in a report back Teams meeting by Mthatha Deeds Registrar and can provide a lot of texture on that. Deeds Office on ground floor, partially affected but protected. Issues around historic black quitrent titles
Thank you Rosie!
Would you be kind enough to pop me an email so we can get in touch?

Sure!

Good article, thank you! And I have helped a further connection. It would be good to drill down to how and why much of the governance in Mthatha descended to chaos after 1994. I don’t mean everything and everyone. There are some notable exceptions among many professionals and government servants, and no doubt ordinary folk whom I don’t know. But absence of public service is visually apparent. I lived there from 1980-1985. I taught some of that time at the University of Transkei (UNITRA) with some wonderful and later highly successful colleagues. My son was born in St Mary’s Maternity Home and we had five very good and mostly happy years there. We returned from 1992-1994 and my kids went to school there. But a distinct change for the worse in terms of road safety and general maintenance was already in the air. It was not like this before. What happened? Spoiler alert: Bhisho! (among others)
