I’ve been thinking about Dricus du Plessis since this weekend. This thing he says: “Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie, Suid-Afrika!” (They don’t know what we know, South Africa) has really captured people’s imaginations. So I’ve been wondering what it is that people think that we know that the rest of the world doesn’t. What is the secret that everyone’s supposedly in on? Is it to do with us being exceptionally tough because of our country’s history? Is it to do with South African character? Is it a masculinity thing? I’d love to hear what other people think.

My view is that the saying is intentionally esoteric, used to form people into a group that “know”, wink wink. I don’t believe the group all know the same thing, but that’s not important to be part of the herd. I started off thinking that it wasn’t a masculine thing, but when I read back what I’ve just written, it can only be masculine bro! (high five).

If I didn’t know better, I’d think Dricus was some sort of a communications genius.
