I loved this story today out of Gqeberha about how blood donations saved a premature baby’s life. Eli was born at just 26 weeks, weighing only 740g. He just turned one years old, thanks in part to the eight blood transfusions he received.
According to the South African National Blood Service, a single blood donation can save up to three lives. I’ve been inspired. (Find a donation centre here: https://sanbs.org.za/donor-centres)
If you’re a donor, what inspired you to start, or what keeps you going back? If you haven’t donated, what’s the biggest barrier for you?
I donate regularly - have so many pairs of socks and mugs from the blood service. Sometimes they turn me away because of low iron (I’m mostly vegetarian)
I used to donate, and I had over 50 donations, but due to skin cancer, they placed me on pension. When my late wife needed blood, I was battling with accounts. They could not even waive the admin cost to assist us.
