Smart IDs at your bank — and soon, from your couch

Still don’t have your smart ID? The new “Home Affairs @ home” initiative means applying for documents could soon be as easy as using your banking app.

What this means for you:

  • Services will expand from 30 branches to hundreds nationwide, with Capitec and FNB leading the rollout.

  • Future plans include applying for smart IDs and passports via banking apps, with home delivery.

  • Faster, more reliable verification and replacement of vulnerable green ID books with secure smart IDs.

  • Partner banks say they won’t charge extra for Home Affairs transactions.

:credit_card: How it works for Capitec users

  • If the Department of Home Affairs does not have a suitable ID photo on file, you can visit a special smart ID terminal in select Capitec branches.

  • You enter your ID number, and have your photo taken, at which point the system verifies your identity against the department’s database in real time.

  • Your smart ID will be ready for collection at the same branch within weeks.

  • For even greater convenience, functionality through the Capitec app and home delivery will be introduced later. Passport renewal will be added soon.

It took Schrieber under a year what the previous ministers could not achieve in 20 years simply because this minister has placed the interests of SA ahead of those of his party, his voters, his friends, his followers and his family. A lesson to be learnt by all those ministers who place party, friends, followers and family ahead of SA, and there are many of them atm.

I am a Naturalized South African and when I applied for smart ID I got an appointment only to be told at the office that as my parents were born outside RSA, they could not issue me one. Has this changed now

@SharpSchutters Do you have any insight on this?

Have been trying to get a straight answer all week - Niks. Will update when I do.
