Yellowwood Park / Woodhaven are small neighborhoods south of Durban. Traditionally they have received limited attention from the Durban metro apart from basic services. In 2024 a new Ratepayers Committee Association was elected and they set about engaging with the Metro in a new and constructive way. The first step was to forge a relationship with the South Durban Basin Association responsible for co-ordinating metro services in the area. The second step was to delineate the communities into 17 precincts made up of a maximum of 3kms of roads and volunteer precinct co-ordinators trained and capacitated. The co-ordinators do a monthly survey of their precinct to identify broken lights, potholes, water leaks, infrastructure issues etc. These are captured on Google drive sheets, summarised and submitted to the South Durban Basin for action. The next month the co-ordinators identify both those items attended to by the metro and any new items that may have arisen. We have seen significant improvements to our areas through this engagement.

Such a great description of how good work can be done in communities. It is easy to say things should be fixed, but I enjoyed this insight into how that is practically being achieved.
@HeatherR An interesting good news story
This is heartening to read. In the midst of all bad news about cities, some, as citizens have forgotten that they too have a role to play in their environment. It’s too easy to be a keyboard warrior and blame everyone else. I hope more areas follow on and take ownership of their surrounding areas. Well done guys!
