While removing the need for people to queue for badly needed support is laudable, an unintended consequence is that this removes ‘the problem’ from sight. No more queues, no more faces, no human need to be seen.
Sure, we see the numbers, percentages, the charts. But numbers numb. And that creates an opportunity for people to be forgotten. Old people, young people, mothers with babies on their backs, in rain, in blistering heat, whether it’s windy, or cold. We do not see that when everything gets neatly tucked away.
