Following a fractious summit in Johannesburg, the US has excluded South Africa from the upcoming sherpas’ meeting in Washington in December. This appears to be the first step in President Trump’s threat to bar SA from the 2026 Leaders’ Summit in Miami. Should South Africa “gatecrash” the meeting as some diplomats suggest, or stand back and leverage our relationships within BRICS?
How should SA respond to the US exclusion?
- Gatecrash: Send a delegation to Washington anyway.
- Protest: Lodge a formal complaint but stay home.
- Pivot: Ignore the US and focus on BRICS partners.
- Apologise: Try to mend bridges with the Trump administration.
