US requests for its chargé d'affaires to pick up the G20 leadership from Ramaphosa

Ignoring for a moment the gob-smacking disrespect shown by the Trump administration to all its G20 partners and South Africa specifically, this quote from Ramaphosa caught my eye: “As I’ve often said, boycott politics never work”.

A rather curious thing to say. By extension, does that imply Ramaphosa is retrospectively opposed to the boycotts of and sanctions on South Africa prior to 1994? And can we take this as an implicit rejection of the BDS movement?

Thanks for your question, @Menahem. I asked one of our journalists, @Sintamaya, and this was his response:

“I suspect he was speaking in this case in isolation, rather than embracing the much larger sweep of history that reaches all the way back to those relatively weak sanctions placed on Italy in response to its invasion of Abyssinia in 1935.”
