From Fixers to Builders. Beyond the Short-Term

Thursday’s DM Gathering 2025 “State of Repair” morning session introduced three key figures: Minister Leon Schreiber, SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter, and Deputy NDPP Ouma Rabaji-Rasethaba, as South Africa’s “fixers.” Surely, a fixer is often someone who steps in under pressure, puts out fires, and makes immediate problems disappear. That work is important, but it’s almost always short-term. Kieswetter himself said “As quickly as an organisation can be built and restored, it can be destroyed by the appointment of one person in a leadership position.” After state capture, South Africa needs something deeper and long-term. Personally, I prefer the term “builders”. Builders that can create stable foundations to institutions that can’t be broken so easily again. Fixers steady the ship; builders redesign it so it won’t sink again. Government in ‘phase 2’ of plan to recover stolen Gupta money: deputy NPA director . #TheGathering2025
